In Memoriam: Founder of Holland America Flowers
February 11, 2026 | 2 min to read
Bernardus Adrianus Petrus “Benno” Dobbe, founder of Holland America Flowers passed away on February 5, 2026, at the age of 75.
Born on November 12, 1950, in the Netherlands, Benno immigrated to the United States in 1980 with his wife, Klazina Dobbe, their three young children, ten suitcases, and $2,000. Shortly after settling in Woodland Washington, he founded Holland America Bulb Farms and later expanded into California with All Seasons Flowers in Arroyo Grande California. The operations merged in 2006 to form Holland America Flowers.
Benno’s expertise in growing Oriental and Asiatic lilies year-round transformed cut-flower production on the West Coast. He introduced advanced bulb-forcing methods, supported the transition of many farms away from rose production, and helped raise quality and post-harvest standards across the U.S. lily market. His willingness to share knowledge made him a mentor to growers throughout Washington, Oregon, and California.
Known for his animated storytelling, deep industry understanding, and strong belief in the American dream, Benno and Klazina became U.S. citizens on July 4, 1996 — a day he often described as one of his proudest.
Benno is survived by his children Nicolette (Rob), Ben (Jen), and Stefan (Jodi), along with 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
His legacy lives on in the growers he influenced, the innovations he championed, and the generations of industry members shaped by his work, character, and generosity.
A celebration of life will be held on March 1 at 2:00 p.m. at:
