JUNEAU, Alaska — The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) is pleased to announce it has secured over $4.7 million in federal Market Access Program (MAP) funding and $6 million in America First Trade Promotion Program (AFTPP) funding to increase international marketing of Alaska seafood.

MAP funds are provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to share the costs of overseas marketing and promotional activities that help build commercial export markets for U.S. agricultural products and commodities. AFTPP is a new USDA initiative created to strengthen and expand export markets for these products.

The federal funds are restricted for use in international marketing and promotional purposes and are awarded via a competitive application system that requires program matching funds. The MAP funds will be matched at 33 percent of the award while AFTPP funds will be matched at 10 percent. ASMI is able to leverage State of Alaska general funds and the Alaska seafood industry marketing assessment that is set at 0.5% of ex-vessel value as match.

“These international grant awards, in combination with ASMI’s strong efforts in the U.S. domestic market, help to increase demand for Alaska seafood, which in turn increases the value throughout the Alaska seafood supply chain.” said Jeremy Woodrow, ASMI executive director. “This benefits Alaska processors, businesses and fishermen, as well as Alaska communities.”

“I am immensely proud of the ASMI International team, whose efforts and achievements have resulted in sustained and expanding support from USDA,” said Nicole Alba, ASMI international program director. “With 70 percent of Alaska seafood by value exported annually, these awards come at a critical time for our industry. They provide market diversification, competitiveness, increase resiliency, and continue to allow Alaska to feed the world with healthy, nutritious and sustainable protein.”

A 2025 analysis found that ASMI captured more than $40 million in competitive federal grants between 2020 and 2024, nearly matching the $44 million generated by the industry assessment and State of Alaska funding during that timeframe. See the analysis at this webpage: https://www.alaskaseafood.org/news/for-release-asmi-delivers-strong-return-on-investment/
