AvoGrey® Greenskin avocados have been awarded a gold medal at the New Zealand Outstanding Food Producer Awards, recognizing their exceptional quality and eating experience.

The Outstanding Food Producer Awards celebrate the very best of New Zealand food and drink, with entries judged by an independent panel of industry experts across a range of categories. The awards are widely regarded as a trusted mark of quality, highlighting products that demonstrate excellence in taste, appearance and production.

The judges praised the fruit, noting “It has a beautiful appearance. The skin is even and has an outstanding interior colour. It is a very good, true clean avocado flavour.”

Bred by David Grey of Avogrey® Orchard, the variety has a rich heritage. The orchard was founded in 1969 by David and Judi Grey, building on a family legacy that dates back more than a century. David’s father, Len Grey, introduced the Hass avocado to New Zealand in the 1950s and was widely regarded as a pioneer, while his grandfather Charles Grey first planted avocados in 1916. Today, AvoGrey® Greenskins are grown by a selected group of growers.

Market Gardeners Limited, trading as the MG Group, holds the exclusive marketing rights for AvoGrey® Greenskins. The fruit is currently available in market through to mid-late May, with more growers now planting the variety and volumes expected to increase over the next five years.

AvoGrey® Greenskins are positioned as a true food lovers’ avocado. They remain green when ripe, have firmer, denser flesh, and offer a rich, nutty, smooth and creamy eating experience. The fruit is generally larger, with a smaller stone and easy peeling skin, and maintains its fresh quality without browning.

With its distinctive characteristics and growing supply, AvoGrey® Greenskins are set to become an increasingly important part of the New Zealand avocado category.
