Nurserymen’s Exchange today announced it will lay off 135 of its roughly 300 employees, blaming the recession for declining company sales. After 60 days of administrative leave, the employees will be terminated in early September.
“The people we are having to let go are loyal, productive employees, and we understand the difficulties they and their families will face,” Nurserymen’s Exchange president Jack Pearlstein said in a prepared statement. He added that the company had postponed these cuts for as long as it could.
Nurserymen’s Exchange is Half Moon Bay’s third largest employer, with 3.75 percent of the city's total employment as reported in the 2009 city audit. It is one of the country’s largest wholesale indoor plant companies
