RIVER JOHN — Lobster catches in northern Nova Scotia are as good as last year and slightly better in places, the president of the Northumberland Fishermen’s Association said Sunday.
"But prices are depressed," said Ron Heighton.
Fishermen received $3.50 and $3.75 a pound for market-size lobster during the first week of the season, which opened the first day of May.
Heighton said the price may rise as the season progresses.
The average price paid to fishermen for the past week hasn’t been calculated yet, but consumers buying directly from fishermen would have paid about $5 a pound for larger market lobsters, he said. An area grocery store was charging $6.99 a pound Sunday for market lobsters.
