HOUMA — Waters off Terrebonne, closed Saturday after fishermen reported catching oil-covered shrimp, were reopened today after authorities determined the contamination was not related to the Deepwater Horizon oil leak.
An investigation is under way to determine how the oily substance came in contact with shrimp on board the 50-foot vessel Rocking Angel, captained by Lyle Dehart of Dularge, authorities said.
Waters closed Saturday are now open. The impacted area is south of latitude 29.19.59 and north of 29.10.16, from Point au Fer to Cocodrie. Louisiana’s territorial seas from Point au Fer east to 91 degrees longitude are also now open, Barham said.
Oyster beds in those areas remain off limits.
“Our department remains on high alert as we make daily assessments of state waterways,” Barham said. “I want people to be out there fishing. This is the Sportsman’s Paradise, but at the same time the safety of our seafood must be a top priority.”
