A Fresh Approach To Business (And Lobsters)

CAPE PORPOISE — When Allen Daggett, president of Cape Porpoise Lobster Company, was asked about his company being named York County's 2011 Small Business of the Year by York County Community College, he modestly replied, "I am sure there are more than a few companies throughout the county that were more deserving of this honor than we are."

However, once Daggett began to enthusiastically talk about his business and how it has unfolded into a multifaceted operation, it was easy to understand why his company had been honored.

Daggett, along with his three brothers, is in the third of four successive generations of Daggetts who have been Maine lobstermen and includes his grandfather, father, brothers and now three nephews. But lobstering was not exactly what Daggett wanted to do, so instead he started the Daggett Lobster Company, a local lobster wholesaler in 1970. While that business was interrupted for several years while Daggett worked in Texas, he returned to Maine to restart his wholesaling business — Cape Porpoise Lobster Company.
