Boston Mayors Drink Policy Causes Stir

Mayor Thomas M. Menino is cracking down on sugary drinks for making us fat, but the beverage industry is firing back at the Hub boss’ nanny state antics.

“It’s disturbing that the city is choosing to intrude into the lives of people by telling them what they can drink with regards to safe, non-alcoholic beverages,” said Chris Gindlesperger of the American Beverage Association, the soft drink industry’s lobbying arm. “The people of Boston are more than capable of deciding what to buy without government help.”

Citing a link between the consumption of sweetened beverages and rising obesity, Menino has ordered city departments to phase out the sale and advertising of sugary drinks.
