EPC Hosts Event at Blue Claws Stadium

The Eastern Produce Council recently hosted a summer event, attended by a small group of members, at Blue Claws Stadium in Lakewood, NJ, on August 6th. The Jersey Shore Blue Claws are a Minor League Baseball team and the High-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The council wanted to support the New Jersey Department of Agriculture who was partnering with the ballclub that night. To celebrate agriculture in the Garden State the BlueClaws, in partnership with the Jersey Fresh Program, became the Jersey Tomatoes for the night. Players and coaches wore “Jersey Tomatoes” hats and jerseys, and the first 500 adults received a pack of Scarlet Sunrise Tomato Seeds.

There was a series of tomato-themed in-game promotions, New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Ed Wengryn threw out the ceremonial first pitch, and the Director of the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s Division of Food and Nutrition, Rose Chamberlain, sang the National Anthem.
Jersey Fresh gave everyone a pint of cherry tomatoes as they exited the ballpark to top off the night.
It was a fun hot summer night, enjoyed by all who attended. The Frederick Keys defeated the Jersey Shore BlueClaws 9-7.
