WATSONVILLE, CALIF. – The California Strawberry Commission (CSC) wrapped up its five-day strawberry food truck event in the Los Angeles area this month, raising enough money to help the L.A. branch of Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry® campaign offer over 13,200 meals to kids in need. Launched on National Night Out August 1, the food truck event gave families a chance to give back to the community by purchasing sweet and savory dishes including strawberry Nutella crepes, strawberry basil lemonade, and summer strawberry salads.
“Centered around strawberries grown by California farmers, this event was a great way to make that personal connection with local communities and contribute to a good cause,” said Carolyn O’Donnell, CSC communications director. “With strawberries among the healthiest foods to eat, this event was also a good way to share important nutrition facts and remind people that studies suggest eating just eight strawberries a day may improve heart health and reduce the risk of chronic conditions as we age."
The California strawberry food truck also offered communities a chance to connect with strawberry farmers. An important industry for Latino communities as well as California’s economy, 65 percent of strawberry farmers are of Latino descent, with 70,000 jobs created as a result of strawberry farming. Serving as a gateway to the American dream, about 25 percent of Latino strawberry farmers started out as field workers before becoming farmers and business owners.
“As a strawberry farmer, it’s always satisfying to see the community taste and enjoy the food we grow," said farmer Michael Cleugh of Eclipse Berry Farms. “We are happy to support events that help people gain a better understanding of the people, the passion, and the hard work behind growing one of America’s favorite fruits.”
Strawberry lovers who couldn’t make it to the food truck were encouraged to follow along on social with #PickReal, where everyone from toddlers to law enforcement could be seen with a strawberry dish in hand.
