Sanderson Farms, which said this year it would build a poultry-processing plant near Goldsboro, has expanded its site search to include areas near Rocky Mount.
The Mississippi company had focused on Wayne County, but it now is also looking farther north in Nash County. Sanderson needs about 1,000 acres where it can build a processing plant and a spray field for the plant's treated wastewater.
"It will be near Goldsboro in some sense of that word, whether or not it's five miles out of town or 20 miles, we just don't know," said Mike Cockrell, Sanderson's chief financial officer.
Cockrell said the company expects to choose a site soon, as construction on the plant is scheduled to begin in the spring.
