American consumers love their moms, and they'll prove it with their wallets.
According to the National Retail Federation, Mother's Day is the second largest consumer-spending holiday in the U.S., second only to winter's Christmas, Hanukah and Kwanza.
And local retailers say they expect business to be strong this year as consumer confidence is up and the darkest days of the economy seem to be past.
The average person will fork out $126.90 on Mother's Day gifts this year, compared with $123.89 last year, according to the NRF, which surveyed more than 8,000 consumers on their Mother's Day spending plans. Total Mother's Day spending is expected to reach $14.6 billion.
