Giant Food has once again been selected to design and create the floral blankets that will drape the winners of the 144th annual Preakness Stakes and the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes. This marks the 23rd year Giant will create the blankets for the race. The blankets incorporate nearly 2,000 flowers each and take five in-store florists roughly eight hours to complete. The blankets will be constructed by Giant Food’s floral experts at the Giant on York Road in Baltimore, the day before each race.
The Preakness Stakes, occurring Saturday, May 18, is the second race of the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing and is one of Maryland’s most honored traditions. The Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, occurring Friday, May 17, is one of Pimlico’s oldest stakes races. Both races are held at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md.
