Recent Recall Represents 'Huge Hit' For Connecticut Oyster Growers

NEW HAVEN – For decades, Connecticut oysters have been in strong demand across the country and internationally, particularly in the summertime.
One reason is that the state’s Long Island Sound-grown Blue Point oysters, unlike some warmer water varieties, had never seen a widespread, bacteria-related recall.
That made the Aug. 5 voluntary recall of oysters harvested off Norwalk and Westport all the more disturbing.
In the wake of the Vibrio parahaemolyticus outbreak, which has sickened at least 14 people, oyster producers, shippers, distributors and the state officials who work with them are working hard to prevent another such situation from arising — and minimize any lasting damage to the market.
