Global Demand & A Low Australian Dollar Help To Drive Up Price Of Lamb

The demand for red meat continues to strengthen, with the national trade lamb indicator holding steady above 600 cents per kilogram for the first time in four years.

It is the first time since April 2011 that the indicator has remained above 600 cents (cwt) for more than a day.

Lamb producer Kevin Hoff, from Outback Lambs at Bell in southern Queensland, said the price was high but not unexpected.

"It's not the first time we've gone to the 600 cents – we were back there in 2011 – but actually at the moment, the cattle indicator has gone through the roof as well. Just with being in the meat protein business, it was only feasible that the sheep and the lamb would get to the same money," he said.
