United Fresh Welcomes Sen. Pat Roberts To The Washington Conference

WASHINGTON, DC – United Fresh Produce Association welcomes Sen. Pat Roberts, (R) Kansas, to the Tuesday, September 9 General Session Breakfast at The Washington Conference. The senior senator from Kansas has a distinguished career of serving in the House and Senate on several key committees, and has served as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senate Ethics Committee, and the House Agriculture Committee. As Congress begins its work after the August recess, Sen. Roberts will preview the legislative agenda leading up to the 2014 midterm elections, and offer insights on the political landscape, and associated challenges, that members of Congress face as they work to move legislation.

“We’re pleased that Sen. Roberts will join us at The Washington Conference to share his thoughts about legislation pending before Congress,” said United Fresh Senior Vice President of Public Policy Robert Guenther.  “With his considerable tenure in both the House and Senate, Sen. Roberts understands the tough work necessary to get legislation passed in today’s partisan political environment.”

On Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, attendees of The Washington Conference will put Sen. Roberts’ insights into practice as they participate in United’s March on Capitol Hill, meeting with members of Congress and their staffs on priority issues for the produce industry, such as immigration reform and nutrition policy.

Sen. Roberts’ address is one of many educational opportunities at the conference, September 8-10, at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.  Attendees will participate in educational sessions and discussions on food safety, immigration reform, nutrition policy, agricultural water supply, GMOs, international trade, transportation and other priority issues for the fresh fruit and vegetable industry. Nearly 500 members of the produce industry will attend United’s annual public policy event.
