COCODRIE — The blue-and-white hull of James Blanchard’s trawler, the Waymaker, glided south Wednesday on Bayou Little Caillou. The veteran fisherman headed out for shrimp at a time of year when many others remain in port.
Its wake barely nudged a docked vessel, the Gene and Derek II, where 46-year-old Gene Callahan and 47-year-old Lee Moore were painting, preparing for a shrimp season expected to open in three months.
Both boats are signs that local shrimpers see a future after the Deepwater Horizon disaster, hoping for the best and trying not to think of the worst.
But ecology, economy, consumer choice and diverse post-spill philosophies have yet to crystallize into any one truth for local fleets other than an understanding that some fishermen are hurting and others are hurting less.
