New Seafood Packing Plant For The Eastern Shore

MELFA, VA — Gov. Robert F. McDonnell made his first trip to Virginia's Eastern Shore since his inauguration to break ground on a long-awaited seafood packing and marketing facility.

The 39,000-square-foot, $5.4 million facility will be built on state-owned land next to the Eastern Shore Farmers Market in Melfa.

In a surprise announcement during the ceremony, McDonnell said the markets will be named after former Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Bob Bloxom of Accomack County, who for nearly two decades advocated for the seafood facility's construction.

"The Bloxom name is a symbol for character and integrity and service and leadership and love and passion for agriculture and seafood and a way of life on the Eastern Shore," McDonnell said after calling Bloxom to the podium.
