There were questions and there were some concerns but when licence holders at a Sept. 7 meeting in Yarmouth – that is those who showed up for the meeting – were asked if they support giving up half a cent for every pound of lobster they land, not one person in the room raised their hand in opposition.

The question was put to them by the Lobster Council of Canada, which is looking for a way to fund the council and also to market, promote and brand the lobster industry in the four Atlantic Provinces and Quebec.

Meetings similar to one in Yarmouth were held in Wedgeport, Meteghan and Centreville last week. Following the first three of those meetings, support for the one-cent proposal by the licence holders in attendance was around 90 per cent. At the Yarmouth meeting, some of the fishermen in the room openly said they welcome the opportunity to support an initiative that could raise significant dollars for marketing and promotion of their troubled industry.
