The P.E.I. government is hoping the closure of the Ocean Choice fish plant in Souris could provide opportunities to revitalize the lobster processing industry.
Ocean Choice announced Monday it would not open the plant for the new season, which starts May 2, and were putting it up for sale. The Souris plant processed about one quarter of the Island's lobster catch. Three hundred people are out of work.
But Fisheries Minister Neil LeClair sees a bright side to the closure. Ocean Choice had signed a deal with the previous Tory government that made helping other lobster processors expensive.
"If OCI, let's say, was three times as big then they would be entitled to three times the assistance as well," said LeClair.
