With two-thirds of all American seafood eaten outside of the home, the South Carolina Aquarium has long focused its sustainability efforts on restaurants. But the aquarium this week announced it's shifting the thrust of its programming to directly educate consumers about the ocean's vulnerable species and responsible eating choices.

"We're at a point where we believe consumers want to do the right thing," says the aquarium's president and CEO, Kevin Mills. "Now we're breaking down the walls."

Since its creation 12 years ago, the Sustainable Seafood Initiative has sponsored fancy dinners intended to showcase fisheries that aren't associated with environmental degradation. Mills says those events will continue, but they'll be supplemented by a range of consumer-targeted events at Whole Foods Market and GrowFood Carolina: The rebranded outreach operation kicks off tomorrow night at GrowFood's warehouse with an overview of best practices for South Carolinian seafood fans.
