Spartan Stores Plans To Open 4 To 6 Valu Land Stores Over Next 12 Months

BYRON TOWNSHIP, MI – Spartan Stores is betting that its deep discount Valu Land stores could help the company grow its retail presence beyond Michigan's borders.
The Byron Township grocer wants to open four to six of the small format stores in fiscal 2013, and is looking at locations outside the state.
“I don’t think we’ve excluded any markets but we are looking outside of Michigan,” CEO Dennis Eidson said in an interview with MLive. “We think the concept is transportable and could bring growth opportunities outside the state."
Whether these stores are best suited to rural locations – where three Spartan stores were converted to the model in the last year – or a more urban environment where a new store was opened earlier this month in Lansing Township is being evaluated.
