LAKELAND – They say you shouldn't shop for food when you're hungry, and that's probably a good idea at GFS Marketplace.

Go in with a rumbling stomach, and you might walk out with a three-gallon tub of ice cream, a 6-pound tray of lasagna, or a 10-pound block of cheese.
Michigan-based GFS opened its first Polk County store Monday at 3723 U.S. 98 N., and customers turned out in droves, overwhelming the parking lot and side streets with cars.
Marketplace stores carry a variety of bulk foods and dining supplies, which make them ideal for restaurateurs and small businesses. But GFS also positions itself as a warehouse-style wholesale club for family shopping, minus the membership requirement and warehouse.
