Family-owned Race Street Foods has been serving customers for 65 years. But when the third generation of Barsantis and Riparbellis approached Gino Barsanti, the company's patriarch, about selling he agreed.

On Oct. 1 the wholesale part of the business, which sells the meat, fish and poultry to restaurants and hotels was bought by Sysco Corp. The publicly traded company purchased the account receivables and paid off outstanding bills. Sysco also bought the inventory for about $2 million, and it also bought the customer list and the assets. The retail portion of the business will close on Oct.14. This was not sold to Sysco.

But don’t panic. The restaurant portion of the business will still be owned by Dan Barsanti and his cousin Jim Riparbelli.
