Publix Listed On Fortune’s 100 Best Companies To Work For

LAKELAND, Fla. — For the 13th consecutive year, Publix has been honored as one of FORTUNE magazines 100 Best Companies to Work For. Publix was ranked No. 86 on this years list and was one of only 13 companies to have made the list every year since its inception in 1998. Publix also ranked No. 29 on FORTUNEs Best Large-Sized Company list, one of only four companies on the list with more than 100,000 employees. On FORTUNEs Big Pay list, Publix ranked No. 27 for salaried employees and No. 84 for hourly employees. Publix also made the FORTUNE list of 18 companies to never have had a layoff and was the only company with more than 100,000 employees on this list.

This recognition goes straight to our people who help make Publix a great place to work every day. All of our retail and support associates should be proud of this achievement, said Publix CEO Ed Crenshaw.

According to FORTUNE, a driving factor for the companies on this years list were hiring and the ways in which companies are helping their employees weather the recession.

Two-thirds of a companys score is based on a survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about the management’s credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie. The remaining third is based on a companys responses to the Culture Audit questionnaire, which asks detailed questions about pay and benefits programs, and open-ended questions about hiring, communication and diversity. The story will appear in the Feb. 8, 2010 issue of FORTUNE. More information about the survey and how companies were ranked can be found at FORTUNEs Web site, www.fortune.com.

Publix is privately owned and operated by its 141,000 employees, with 2008 sales of $23.9 billion. Currently Publix has 1,012 stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. Publixs dedication to superior quality and customer service is recognized as tops in the grocery business, most recently by an American Customer Satisfaction Index survey.
