Pathmark workers represented by a Clifton-based local voted Monday night to approve a contract that the supermarket’s parent company, A&P, said it needed to emerge from bankruptcy.
The contract was approved at a meeting in Edison attended by close to 500 of the 2,800 Pathmark workers who are members of Food and Commercial Workers Local 1262.
“Although we are not happy that our members had to accept certain concessions, we are proud to say that we were successful in getting A&P to agree to maintain all health and welfare benefits and to continue contributions to the pension fund,” the local’s president, Harvey Whille, said in a statement after the vote.
A&P, which is based in Montvale, had sought concessions from the 13 union locals representing workers at its A&P and Pathmark stores as part of its bankruptcy reorganization plan. The other North Jersey-based local, Local 464A, is scheduled to complete its votes on the contract Tuesday.
