If a new Trader Joe's opens in the historic Alabama Theatre, it would be at least the eighth grocer operating in the compact area connecting parts of Montrose, Upper Kirby and River Oaks.
There's the Randalls at Westheimer and Shepherd, Fiesta on Dunlavy and West Alabama, Kroger on West Gray and another on Montrose, the Kirby Whole Foods and the new one on Waugh, and H-E-B is building a new store across from the Fiesta.
How many grocery stores does one area need?
This many and maybe more, said Ed Page of Page Partners, a retail brokerage firm.
"There's a lot of affluence and a lot of density there," said Page, who represents Sprouts, another specialty grocer considering the area.
