The calendar is quickly counting down to Jan. 1, when every restaurant employee who comes in contact with food must have a California Food Handler Card.
Signed in September 2010, the food safety law is estimated to apply to about 900,000 restaurant employees.
Simply stated, the law requires anyone who touches food to be trained and to pass a test about food safety.
“Restaurant operators are incredibly busy and have hundreds of laws to comply with just to keep their doors open,” Jot Condie, California Restaurant Association president, said in a statement. “We’ve executed an aggressive educational campaign using a variety of communication channels, including earned, paid and social media, to ensure operators know about the law and how to comply, yet we know there are still folks out there who aren’t aware. Unfortunately they may learn about it the hard way through a health inspection penalty.”
