A New Conversational Way to Search on DoorDash
June 11, 2026 | 4 min to read
Tell DoorDash what you’re looking for and get from craving to checkout faster — whether you’re building a grocery cart, ordering dinner, or booking a table.
We’re introducing Ask DoorDash, a new way to search the app in your own words. Tap the Ask button in the search bar and tell DoorDash what you’re in the mood to eat, share a recipe link or cookbook photo, or describe the reservation you’re looking for to get personalized results in seconds. No more building a grocery cart item by item only to give up halfway through. No more endless scrolling through restaurants.
The average person in the U.S. has an estimated 800,000 menu items and grocery products available to them on DoorDash.* Ask quickly searches through all of that inventory to match you with a great restaurant or build your grocery cart.
“We’ve spent over a decade building an app that puts everything in your city at your fingertips, but more options shouldn’t mean more work,” said Andy Fang, Co-founder of DoorDash. “Now you can search DoorDash in your own words to find exactly what you want. And we know if the vegetarian option you prefer is on the menu before recommending a restaurant, or that you recently ordered flour and sugar before stocking up on groceries. The app works harder so you don’t have to.”
Ask DoorDash is available now in select areas on iOS for restaurant search and grocery shopping, and is rolling out for DoorDash Reservations and to more users across the U.S. in the coming weeks.
Snap It. Paste It. Shop It: Turn recipes and grocery lists into a cart in seconds
You can ask DoorDash to tackle your grocery run by uploading a photo from your favorite cookbook, pasting a recipe link, or snapping a pic of your grocery list, and the app quickly builds your cart.
Here’s what it looks like. You’re flipping through your grandma’s old cookbook and find your favorite recipe: Mexican Wedding Cookies. Tap Ask in the search bar, upload a photo of the recipe, and DoorDash builds a grocery cart from your usual grocer with the right ingredients and quantities already filled in. The app will even prompt you to check for staples like butter and salt so you don’t buy something you already have in your pantry. Review your items, swap brands if needed, and you’re good to go. Less list-making, more cookie-baking.
Ordering your usuals also just got easier. You can ask DoorDash to reorder your last grocery cart, shop your usuals, and even suggest new items based on your past orders. Shopping simplified.
From craving to checkout: Tell DoorDash what you want and get a delivery cart tailored to your ask
Deciding what to eat shouldn’t take longer than eating it — just tell DoorDash what you want. Type “filling dinner for a family of 4” and nearby restaurants surface instantly, each with personalized context for why it’s a great match. A place you’ve ordered from and loved. A spot with delicious, healthy food at a great value. Somewhere close that delivers fast.
But you’ve got picky eaters to satisfy, so you keep the conversation going: “Show me spots that are kid-friendly and vegetarian, nothing too spicy.” The results refine in real time with even more tailored recommendations.
Once you find the right place, ask DoorDash to build you a cart, and the app will suggest an order based on your dietary preferences, budget, group size or past orders. From there you can make adjustments, and check out in a few taps.
Your table, your way: Describe the night you have in mind and book the perfect table
With Ask DoorDash for Reservations coming soon, planning a meal out becomes just as easy. Say it’s Friday night and you’re headed to dinner and a show — you’ve planned the show but still aren’t sure where or when you’re eating. You open DoorDash, head to the Reservations tab, tap Ask, and type: “table for 2 downtown for a date-night dinner around 8 PM.” Spots with availability surface right away, but you ask DoorDash for something a little more intimate with a good cocktail list. DoorDash refines the results. You find the perfect spot, tap the time that works best for you, and book. Date night handled.
Traditional search works best when you know the exact restaurant or table you’re looking for. Ask DoorDash is designed for the moments when you don’t. When a customer describes what they’re looking for — say, an affordable dinner for the family with dishes under $20— DoorDash can now connect them with the perfect restaurant, even if that restaurant might not have caught their eye in their usual scroll. The right customer, finding the right place, at exactly the right time is a win for everyone.
From dinner to groceries to a table for two — just Ask DoorDash.
*Estimated based on the average number of items and products eligible for delivery in under an hour across a sample of 10,000 U.S. DoorDash consumers as of June 2026.
