It’s Green in the Valley
Valley Fruit & Produce’s (Valley) sustainability program is showing strong results with its initiatives to cut the company’s water and electricity consumption.
The company increased its focus on water use almost two years ago, and electricity consumption around half a year ago. With the help of a number of Los Angeles Department of Water & Power incentive programs, Valley has worked its way to reducing water consumption at its best performing facility by up to 60%, and electricity by one third– all from an investment of around $2,000.
Benefits to the company of just over 250 employees include significant savings on the utility bills. More broadly, this is a measurable contribution to preserving some of California’s scarce resources. “Valley’s been handling the fruits of the earth daily for almost 100 years. It’s logical to us that we need to continue our efforts to preserve and give back to her.” says Carrie La Londe, COO and third generation co-owner.
Douglas La Londe, Co-CEO and third generation co-owner, is also strongly behind the initiative. “We’re helping to reinforce that sustainability provides a wider range of benefits in addition to respecting our planet and community. There is also a strong business case to be made with healthy ROIs – making this a uniquely easy initiative to support.”
Since using water and electricity more efficiently has proved beneficial on several levels, the sustainability program is now turning its attention to evaluating other sustainability-focused business opportunities.
