The sizzle of assorted meats on the large open fire grill early Monday afternoon signified the start of work on Cargill’s new $14.7 million research and development facility.
The company used a grill lighting to break away from the traditional ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on its 75,000-square foot Cargill Innovation Center, which will be built at 1st and Wichita Streets. Company representatives, city and county leaders and people from the business community were on hand for Monday’s event.
“There is a tremendous amount of pride knowing this facility will be located in the heart of downtown Wichita,” says Jody Horner, president of Cargill Meat Solutions.
Construction on the facility will begin in July and will be finished in about a year, the company says.
