“A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose,” wrote Gertrude Stein. So why does a
dozen roses cost $15 at one store and $60 at another?
The answer is part quality, part presentation and part buying power.
Walmart is selling a bouquet of 12 roses with a few sprigs of baby’s breath and
greens for $15. At Farm Fresh supermarkets, a dozen roses with similar
embellishments costs $30.
Some independent local florists offer wrapped or boxed rose bouquets for as much
as $60 a dozen for Valentine’s Day – which is Sunday.
