Waxy Additions For The Florist: Chameleons Under The Roses

White roses are the basis for almost all coloured or 'treated' roses. Wax roses generally use Avalanche+ roses. Wax roses are available year round, but supply and demand is greatest from October to December.

The roses are carefully sorted by length, maturity stage and bud size. The half-open flowers are dipped in a bath of liquid wax heated to about 70 degrees Celsius. The rose is then immediately dipped into a bath of cold water to make the wax firm. No colour is too extreme: black, blue, red, gold or silver, whatever colour takes you fancy. And it's an adaptable process; colours come in gloss or matt and can even have snow or glitter added.

The wax rose has a wide range of uses. Its vase life is approximately two weeks and its diversity means the product can be used on its own or as part of an arrangement such as a bridal bouquet or a funeral wreath. But it's at the end of December when the wax rose reveals itself at its best. It excels at invoking the Christmas atmosphere!
