There’s no disputing the delight one derives from a delivery of daisies, the cheery charm of an arrangement of chrysanthemums, the very vivid impact of a vase of violets — and now Winnipeg Harvest has thrown its support behind a new effort that aims to make the gift of flowers a gift that keeps giving.
The local food bank is partnering with a new program called Floral Philanthropy, which "repurposes" flowers from local events — weddings, birthdays, family celebrations — to bring redesigned floral pick-me-ups to people in health-care facilities who might otherwise never receive a gift of flowers.
Volunteers will retrieve flowers from donors’ venues and take them to Winnipeg Harvest, where they will be clipped, trimmed and rearranged and delivered to health-care facilities where their presence will offer a much-needed boost.
