Grower’s union ‘Air So Pure’ has recently commissioned new scientific research into the air-purifying abilities of plants. Its results are in, and they confirm what a number of us were aware of already: plants really do help keep our homes free of toxic fumes. Florists thereby potentially have a novel argument to employ for their marketing endeavors.
Seeing as the latest research documenting the air-purifying tendencies of certain plants is already a number of years old, there had been calls for more up-to-date evidence from a number of market participants. That perceived deficiency has hereby been addressed.
The research project commissioned by Air So Pure was undertaken by Fytagoras, a subsidiary of Dutch independent research organization TNO that specializes in plants. Bert van Duijn, Chief Scientific Officer at Fytagoras as well as a professor in plant physiology, comments on the research setup: “to find out to what extent pot plants purify the air, we developed a general test for the plants whereby they all received a grade between 1 and 10”.
