Little Lime Hydrangea Honored With Gold Medal

Little Lime™ hardy hydrangea, a Proven Winners® ColorChoice® variety known for its dwarf habit and lime green blooms, was recently honored with a prestigious gold medal at the 31st Annual Plantarium trade show, held August in the Netherlands. The record 106 new plant introductions were evaluated by an expert judging committee from the Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society during the four day event. The jury regarded Little Lime™ hydrangea as innovative “because of its compact growth habit in combination with the flower shape, strong branches and broad applicability in both public green spaces and private gardens.”

Little Lime hydrangea was bred by Tim Wood from Spring Meadow Nursery and released in 2010 as part of the Proven Winners ColorChoice collection. The dwarf form of the popular ‘Limelight’ hydrangea features the same unique coloration as its predecessor – emerging lime and transforming to rich pink in fall – but maintains a tidy 3-5’ habit. Since its introduction, it has become a favorite of designers and gardeners due to its ease of use in smaller landscapes and container gardens, Zone 3-8.

‘Diamond Ball’ clematis, a 2014 Proven Winners ColorChoice release, was also recognized at the event, winning the Plantarium Press Award. The jury, which consisted of over 20 journalists from a dozen countries, was particularly impressed with the vine’s “attractive, double, full flowers which give the plant an abundant appearance.” ‘Diamond Ball’ features cool, white-blue flowers that are semi-spherical in shape and reach 4-5” in diameter. The Zone 4-9 plant is a prolific bloomer that flowers on both old and new wood from June through August. ‘Diamond Ball’ was bred by award-winning clematis breeder Szczepan Marczyski of Poland.
