Los Angeles, CA – Mother’s Day 2012 is L.A.’s biggest flower celebration of the year as Latin American Mother’s Day — Dia de las Madres, and U.S. Mother's Day converge May 10 through May 13. “Mother’s Day fresh flowers top gift lists in the Latin American and U.S. tradition” said Mark Chatoff,LA Flower District California Flower Mall president.
“Folks that buy discount fresh flowers direct from wholesalers can stretch their budgets with blooms to delight every Mom in their life. The San Pedro Street California Flower Mall is the only downtown Los Angeles flower market in the six- block community open late evenings and round the clock for discount and wholesale Dia de las Madres and Mother’s Day flowers," Chatoff added.
Dia de las Madres is one of the most important holidays in Mexico and a majority of Central and South American countries. It is celebrated on May 10th every year, regardless of the day of the week, unlike in the U.S. and 60 other countries where Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May — May 13th this year.
“Dia de las Madres and Mother’s Day are equal to Christmas for LA flower mart wholesalers," said Gersain Bustos owner of Growers Direct at California Flower Mall. “Los Angeles County is home to 4.7 million Hispanics who comprise 48 percent of the population according to official U.S. Census counts and that is an extremely low estimate for many reasons,” Bustos said.
"Latino’s we spend more on mom,” said Hilda Jimenez, operations manager at California Flower Mall. Dia de las Madres is almost as sacred as Christmas in the Latino culture. Jimenez explains, "Typically, the celebration begins on Dia de las Madres Eve when the entire extended family gathers to honor all the Mothers in the family — Moms, Grandmothers, Sisters, Aunts and even expectant mothers. Moms are often serenaded by a mariachi band, given traditional Dia de las Madres flowers – pink and red rose colors are favorites — and treated to a nice meal at home or out at a restaurant."
Mother's Day is the third-largest card-sending holiday in the U.S., but ranks as the number one card-sending season for Hispanics, even higher than Christmas and Valentine's Day. Arlette Torres, Editorial Director for Sinceramente Hallmark who was born in Mexico underscores the importance of mothers to Hispanic consumers. "Mothers are beloved, deeply respected, revered figures in the Hispanic community," she said. "Her children view her as the source of goodness and love, affection, warmth and forgiveness. She is the idealized female figure, unequaled by other women."
Mother’s Day is second only to the winter holidays in retail spending. The National Retail Federation estimates 83.1 percent of U.S. consumers will spend a total of $16.3 billion on mom and about two-thirds of consumers expect to buy flowers.
