Flower auction FloraHolland is doing quite well this year. With almost a month to go in the year still, the turnover of 2009 has nonetheless already been exceeded at the start of December. The higher retail prices for flowers seem to be the main cause of the improvement.

Total turnover up to and including week 47 amounted to € 2.15 billion for FloraHolland. That is exactly the amount as in the entirety of last year, journalistic weblog Agd.nl observantly reports, while the entire coming Christmas proceeds still have to be added to that total. The turnover in cut flowers is 10 percent higher than last year, at this moment.

Higher prices is what is largely causing the increase in revenue, as the volume in cut flowers that was processed by the auction increased by only 0.7%. Prices took a dive in 2009, declining by almost 12 percent compared to the prior year. We have yet to reach the level of prices that we saw in 2008, in fact.
