Dümmen Orange Welcomes Westhoff Annuals to Basewell

Columbus, OH, USA – Dümmen Orange, a global leader in plant breeding and vegetative cutting production, and Westhoff, a flower breeding company based in Germany with a legacy of developments honed for the grower, partner to include the Westhoff line of spring annuals in the Basewell™ product form for spring of 2020 to the North American market. Growers will have access to the best of both worlds: unsurpassed genetics and the innovative rooting technology of Basewell that promises to simplify processes, optimize space, and save labor.

Dümmen Orange introduced Basewell, a groundbreaking new product form, to the North American market in 2018. After a successful inaugural commercial season in 2019, Dümmen Orange is focusing on broadening the Basewell offering to include new partners like Westhoff in order to add more options and breadth to the assortment from which growers can choose.

Christian Westhoff, owner and CEO, regards this opportunity as a strategic next step. “Basewell is a technological leap forward for our industry, and we at Westhoff are excited to be able to have our products offered in this new form. Growers will benefit from the ease of using our products in a new, extremely flexible product form that will help improve input quality. We see this as being another solution to meet our customers’ needs.”

Alongside adding Westhoff genetics to the Basewell program, Dümmen Orange will increase their overall Westhoff portfolio by 35%. New additions for Spring 2020 include the Brachyscome Cottage series and new novelty varieties of Chameleon and Candy Shop Calibrachoa.  The tried-and-true series Hot Lobelia and Crazytunia Petunia also expand with new offerings and improvements for 2020.

On the topic of breeder collaboration, Emily Mason, Dümmen Orange IPT Lead for Bed and Balcony, explains, “In the business of spring annuals where the market demands freshness and novelty, the synergy between Dümmen Orange and Westhoff means growers can plan a complete spring program, for example, with hanging baskets, that will deliver the best and most colorful varieties at retail.”
