Schuman Cheese’s Yellow Door Creamery Line Earns Back-To-Back Grand Master Honors

(Fairfield, New Jersey) A Grand Master title is reason to celebrate in its own right, but Schuman Cheese’s Lake Country Dairy team is enjoying the taste of success twice over with this year’s Grand Master recognition from the Wisconsin State Fair Cheese & Butter Contest. The company’s Yellow Door Creamery brand is a back-to-back Grand Master champion in the competition.

This year’s winning selection, Altu, is offered through Yellow Door Creamery’s acclaimed Alpine Collection, a line of artisan cheeses inspired by the complex, extraordinary flavors of cheese from the Alps. The line is hand-crafted at Lake Country Dairy, a Wisconsin creamery that relies on milk from local family farms.

“Earning a prestigious honor like Grand Master is exciting once, but to have our Alpine line earn that high distinction two years in a row is a tremendous accomplishment,” said head cheesemaker Christophe Megevand. “Passion and artistry go hand-in-hand to make these exceptional cheeses, and our team at Lake Country Dairy is proof that true dedication to consistent quality reaps rewards.”

Yellow Door Creamery is an adventurous platform for cheeses that are as imaginative as they are approachable: the perfect answer for everyday consumers eager to broaden their cheese horizons. The Alpine Collection was created with the notion that exploration isn’t always about creating something new. Sometimes, it’s about making something good better.

The Alpine line is a passion project for Megevand, whose European heritage and training lends Old World authenticity to each and every wheel. Copper vats, natural Alpine cave-aging techniques and hand-smearing produce rich, decadent flavors that fully honor Megevand’s roots while putting an American accent on Alpine-style cheeses.

Each delicious variety from the collection pays homage to a distinct Alpine cheese. Altu is a Gruyere-style cheese with notes of fruit followed by an earthy and nutty finish. Monteau, which earned Grand Master honors in 2017, features fruity flavors with hints of butter and hazelnut that call to mind the Haute Savoie region’s famous Abondance cheese. Rounding out the trio is Valis, which is inspired by Raclette and has a slightly sweet, nutty taste with superior meltability.

Prior to the Grand Master selection, Altu placed first in the Smear Ripened Cheese class at the Wisconsin State Fair. Monteau finished second in the same category, and earlier this year Monteau earned gold in the International Cheese Awards.
