Rep. Claudia L. Tenney is cosponsoring The Wholesome Healthy Original Lactic Excellence Making Intelligent Literate Kids — WHOLE MILK Act— to allow schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program to serve unflavored whole milk.
Tenney, R-22, New Hartford, is also a cosponsor of identical legislation that will be offered as an amendment to the 2018 Farm Bill.
“After speaking with dairy farmers across the district, I learned how important it was for the stability of our farmers and economy to ensure whole milk was sold at schools. Under the Obama Administration, schools across the nation were only allowed to serve low-fat milk during lunch. This decision severely hurt the agriculture market in Upstate as farmers lost out on millions of pints of milk that were no longer able to be sold in schools. Studies have shown that kids who drink whole milk tend to have higher vitamin D levels than those who consume low-fat milk,” said Tenney. “This bill will ensure our growing children get the proper nutrition and will help our dairy farmers struggling with stagnant milk prices. We must ensure children have access to whole milk in schools and this bill will do just that.”
