New Seasons Market is branching out a New Leaf.

The Portland-based chain of neighborhood markets said Tuesday it is acquiring Bay Area-area chain New Leaf Community Markets, a similar group of stores in northern California. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

New Leaf employs about 600 and operates 8 stores in Santa Cruz, San Jose, Half Moon Bay, Pleasanton and Capitola. New Seasons Market chief executive Wendy Collie will oversee the wholly owned subsidiary from Portland. But New Leaf's management team will operate from Santa Cruz. Its founder Scott Roseman will join New Seasons' board.
