BATON ROUGE — Legislation that would alter the shape and scope of the Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board was approved by a House committee without objection Wednesday despite lingering questions over the representation of freshwater fisheries and certain operational changes.

Sen. Norby Chabert, R-Houma, said he's trying to “tighten up” the way the board markets Louisiana seafood to the world by updating its membership and restructuring its bylaws.

“To say it does anything other than that is a falsehood,” Chabert said. “The bones of this bill do just a couple of things.”

While various interests have registered concern over Senate Bill 733, no fishermen, processors or dealers testified during Wednesday's regular meeting of the House Committee on Natural Resources and Environment.
