FOWLER, Calif., – California’s citrus domestic season is right around the corner, and Bee Sweet Citrus is anticipating a strong season.
“Over the next few months, consumers can expect to see some of their favorite varieties back on the shelves of their local retailer,” said Bee Sweet Citrus Sales Representative Joe Berberian. “Throughout the month of October, Satsuma mandarins, Meyer lemons, Pommelos and Navel oranges will be back just in time for new seasonal promotions.”
California’s domestic season runs between the months of October through June, and brings a plethora of specialty citrus varieties to retailers throughout the nation. From the everyday navel, to exotic varieties such as Blood Oranges, consumers can look forward to the return of their seasonal favorites.
“California’s Mediterranean climate provides growers with ideal conditions for growing citrus,” stated Bee Sweet Citrus Field Department Manager Scott Woods. “Because the fruit is sensitive towards extreme temperatures, we’re able to harvest citrus year-round, and specialty varieties during the winter months.”
Specialty citrus varieties are popular for their distinct characteristics and unique flavor. Cara Cara Navels, for example, are known for its beautiful pink interior, while Blood Oranges are sought out for their berry-like flavor. Other specialty varieties, such as Satsuma mandarins, act as an excellent ingredient for parfaits and salads, while Meyer Lemons are utilized as an ingredient for salad dressings and baked goods.
“While we’ve always been able to supply numerous varieties to our consumers during our domestic season, we’re excited to include Gold Nugget mandarins into our specialty citrus line this year,” continued Berberian. “Popular for being one of the sweetest mandarin varieties out there, Gold Nuggets are sure to be a big hit with consumers this season.”
