Get Set For Lamb Lovers Month

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The kickoff of Lamb Lovers Month is being highlighted by many chefs in restaurants and country clubs across the nation featuring lamb on their menus, but meat counters are also offering special prices for American lamb during February.
H-E-B Food Stores, in the center of Texas' sheep-producing region, has long carried lamb. It is being joined by Walmart, the newest outlet for domestic lamb. Although the world's largest chain has carried lamb in the past, officials announced last week it is switching from partial-imported product to 100 percent American-grown lamb.
"Walmart is committed to building its lamb program and stocking consistent cuts of fresh American lamb year round," said Megan Wortman, executive director of Denver-based American Lamb Board. "We've been working hard to get lamb on shoppers' radars, and having the support of this nationwide retailer helps immensely."
Walmart will carry domestic lamb at all 40 distribution centers through 2012. The program will be supplied through Superior Farms and Mountain States Rosen, both ALB members.
