General Mills Sues To Take Down Chobani Yogurt Ads Over Yoplait Preservative

General Mills Inc. is suing Chobani to halt an ad campaign that claims a Yoplait Greek yogurt preservative is used to kill insects.

General Mills (NYSE: GIS) calls the ads "literally false … and highly misleading."

In one television ad (which is below, along with a copy of the lawsuit) Norwich, N.Y.-based Chobani says Yoplait Greek 100 preservative potassium sorbate is "used to kill bugs."

Potassium sorbate is a fungicide that prevents yeast and mold, General Mills said, and is used on crops for the same purpose. The food manufacturer says there is no evidence that it is effective against insects.
