The Breeders & Distributors Conference is scheduled for Dec. 2-3 in Oldenburg and the Ammerland in Germany, a region home to about 150 nurseries — locally known as Baumschulen. Perennial and shrub production is deeply rooted in the region’s horticultural tradition, which we will explore by visiting nurseries Schachtschneider Stauden, zu Jeddeloh Pflanzen and Heinje Baumschulen.
Blume 2000, one of Germany’s leading retailers, will share its view on recent market trends and consumer preferences. An extensive market study on the German ornamental market and a supply-chain-spanning roundtable discussion round off the program.
Wednesday kicks off with a series of presentations, starting with a market study of the German ornamental market, held by Britta Tröster, market analyst at Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft mbH (AMI). The programme continues with a company presentation of Schachtschneider Stauden, one of the main perennial growers of the region.
Together with 7 other perennial growers in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, the company has joined forces in the association Stauden Ring for promotional and educational purposes. The morning concludes with a visit to the Schachtschneider facilities.
In the afternoon, our group will visit the winter fairs at Heinje Baumschulen and Zu Jeddeloh Pflanzen. After a typical German lunch, Sebastian Heinje will shortly introduce his company, highlighting their use of strong concepts to add value to perennials, and participants can explore the Heinje winter fair.
Next stop will be zu Jeddeloh Pflanzen, where Jan Junior zu Jeddeloh will introduce the family business followed by individual time to discover the varieties on display. Expect to see the commercial assortment staged for buyers for the coming season: a practical look at new varieties and retail-oriented presentations of hydrangeas, roses, flowering shrubs, as well as groundcovers, fruit and hedge plants.
The day finishes with Glühwein and dinner at the hotel — opportunity to (re)connect with industry peers in cosy Christmas athmosphere.
Thursday will be all about trade in Germany and beyond, and exchange within the supply chain. Blume 2000, one of Germany’s largest omnichannel plant retailers with more than 170 stores and over 20 million customers annually, will provide insights into their market and customer approach. Consumer preferences and market trends are only some of the topics this presentation will cover.
The programme will be concluded by a cross-sector roundtable bringing together views from breeding, young plants, production and retail: “From breeder to consumer: What will drive the ornamental market of tomorrow?”
The conference concludes with a wrap-up and networking lunch.
