O’NEILL, Nebraska — Gov. Jim Pillen celebrated his victory over cultivated meat Thursday at a butcher shop in rural Nebraska.

The governor ceremonially signed Legislative Bill 246 at Shamrock Locker in O’Neill for the city’s annual Summerfest celebration. The new law will ban the sale and manufacturing of cultivated meat in Nebraska, starting in September.

The bill’s target is cell-derived meat produced from animal cells, enabling the cells to multiply and differentiate into muscle, fat and connective tissue without slaughtering animals. The Food and Drug Administration approved lab-grown meat for human consumption in 2022.
