WATSONVILLE, CA – A & A Organic Farms won the Organic Innovations Showcase Award at the July 2018 Organic Produce Summit in Monterey. The prestigious award honors one company each year for developing a product that has a transformative impact on the organic produce industry. Watsonville-based A & A Organic Farms was honored this year for their use of environmentally friendly recyclable packaging for strawberries, cherry tomatoes, raspberries, blackberries, and sugar snap peas. The cardboard packaging is made with vegetable-based inks, food-grade adhesives, water-based coating, and without wax and affixed labels.
A & A Organic Farms President & Co-founder Andy Martin says, ‘Winning this award is very meaningful to us. We felt the need to have a more environmentally sound packaging option for our customers. The fact that our industry peers voted us as the most innovative shows we are correct in our thinking. The industry wants to make this shift and we are happy to be a part of that. The social media feedback from the consumer on this packaging has been incredible. They are saying, “Finally, THANK YOU! We have been waiting for this option.”’ Many of the products we offer with this packaging are also Fair Trade Certified. In addition to winning this prestigious award, the Santa Cruz County Small Business Development Center named A & A Organic business of the month for their advancement in integrating environmentally friendly packaging to their product line.
