Farwest Seminar Speakers Spotlight Plants For Northwest Landscape & Gardens

Wilsonville, Oregon – Farwest 2017, August 23-25 in Portland, OR, welcomes two of the country’s leading plant authorities, Daniel Hinkley and Sean Hogan, to deliver seminars on plants particularly suited for the landscape and gardens of the Pacific Northwest.
Hinkley, Director of Heronswood Garden and The Gardens of Windcliff, will present two seminars during Farwest. His fi rst, ‘Underutilized Plants for the Northwest Landscape’, scheduled for Wednesday, August 23, 8:30-9:30a, Room113-114, will explore an inventory of understated plants that can provide stellar performance in Northwest gardens. In a second seminar, ‘The Dry Lush; Drought Tolerant Plants for Pacifi c Northwest Gardens’, set for Thursday, August 24, 8:30-9-:30a, Room B110-112, Hinkley will showcase plants that provide remarkable foliage, fl owers, fruit and bark throughout the year in the modifi ed Mediterranean climate of the Northwest.
In 1987, Hinkley and partner, Robert L. Jones, founded Heronswood Nursery, devoted to rare and unusual plants. He currently resides in Indianola, WA where he is in the process of his latest endeavor, the Gardens of Windcliff, overlooking Puget Sound, and comprised of many and varied garden spaces, a large greenhouse, raised beds, and a generous potager for research in edibles. He is currently working on three books related to the span of his efforts and experiences in horticulture.
Hogan, Owner, Cistus Design Nursery, delivers his talk, ‘Plants for Now and the Future’, Thursday, August 24, 3:30-4:30p, Room B113-114. He will share examples of trees, shrubs, and perennials particularly suited for the current garden environment of the Pacific Northwest.
At Cistus Design Nursery, Hogan shares the joys of plants through education, outreach, and enthusiasm. He serves the Hoyt Arboretum in Portland, Oregon as director of collections. He is also curator of the University of California Berkeley Botanical Garden, in charge of the Australian, New Zealand, Canary Island and South African Collections. Hogan designed the New Zealand Forest Plant Collection at the University of Washington Arboretum. He is an accomplished author, with his third book with Timber Press, due out this year.
